Abstract

The purposes of this research were to investigate and compare the mathematical abilities in calculation and in sequencing and pattern representation of preschoolers before and after participating in unplugged coding activities. Additionally, the study aimed to compare their post-intervention abilities against a 75 percent criterion. The sample consisted of 18 male and female preschoolers, aged 5-6 years, enrolled in kindergarten 3/2 during the first semester of the 2025 academic year at the Demonstration School of Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University, Bangkok. The sample was selected using a cluster random sampling method. The research instruments used for data collection included: 1) an assessment test measuring mathematical abilities in calculation and in sequencing and pattern representation, and 2) unplugged coding activity plans. The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design. The statistics used for data analysis included mean, percentage of the mean score, standard deviation, and t-test.

The research findings revealed that:

  1. The mathematical abilities in calculation and in sequencing and pattern representation of the preschoolers after participating in the unplugged coding activities were at an excellent level, both overall and in each specific aspect.
  2. The post-intervention mathematical abilities in calculation and in sequencing and pattern representation of the preschoolers were significantly higher than their pre-intervention scores at the .01 statistical level, both overall and in each specific aspect.
  3. The post-intervention mathematical abilities in calculation and in sequencing and pattern representation of the preschoolers were higher than the 75 percent criterion.
