Abstract

This research aims to analyze the characters in the stage play Hor Taew Tak: The Origin through Virginia Satir’s Iceberg Theory. This qualitative research employs textual analysis as the main method. The study focuses on three main characters: Jae Taew, Jae Moddam, and Jae Cartoon. The findings indicate that the comedic behaviors of these characters function as survival communication patterns that conceal their internal psychological conflicts. Jae Taew exhibits blaming behavior to hide the pressure from family expectations. Jae Moddam displays attention-seeking behavior to compensate for feelings of inferiority and the need for acceptance, while Jae Cartoon uses placating behavior and fantasy to escape loneliness. The findings further reveal that comedic characters are not merely one-dimensional figures, but possess complex psychological structures that influence their behaviors and decisions. The application of the Iceberg Theory uncovers deeper human dimensions within these characters and offers a new perspective for analyzing comedic roles through their internal motivations and hidden psychological conflicts. Furthermore, the study provides an approach for actors to develop performances based on internal motivations rather than merely imitating external behaviors, leading to more realistic and multidimensional character portrayals. The knowledge gained from this research can also be applied as a framework for character analysis and actor training, particularly in the development of comedic characters with greater psychological realism and human depth.
