A Study of Hmong Traditional Clothing for Application in Women’s bag Design

Abstract

This research is qualitative research. The purpose is to study and analyze the wisdom pattern and dress culture of the Hmong people. Ban Khek Noi in terms of style, color, pattern, and the process of creating patterns on costumes. Identity is applied in the design of women's bags. The data was collected and analyzed from documents, textbooks, research articles, and related online media, and the results were analyzed by highlighting the elements for use in creative design. The results of the study showed that the dress of the Hmong reflects cultural identity through the costumes of various traditional events such as the New Year. Weddings and funerals have different formats and details depending on the occasion and beliefs of the community. The patterns on the Hmong costume are structured by the arrangement of straight lines and curves to form geometric patterns such as coin patterns. The patterns are often repeated continuously to create a distinctiveness and sophistication for the costume. Appearance color: Most of them are dark background colors with bright colors such as fuchsia pink, red, indigo, and black, which are colors that reflect the beliefs of wealth, fertility, and protection. In the process of creating patterns. It was found that the patterns were created using traditional handicraft techniques such as cross-stitch hand embroidery, fabric pecking, and candle writing. The process demonstrates the wisdom and skill of the craft that has been passed down over a long time. From the above information, it can be concluded that the dress and handicrafts of the Hmong people in Ban Khek Noi are beautiful and unique arts and crafts in terms of patterns, color schemes, and production processes. Fuchsia pink and indigo are applied in the design of 3 types of women's bag products: clutch handbags, crossbody bags, and wallets to transfer capital through culture to develop contemporary prototype product drafts that are in line with current use. The results also show an approach to creating added value for products along with disseminating, preserving, and inheriting the cultural identity of the Hmong people.
