Chinese opera is a traditional performing art that plays a significant role in preserving the cultural heritage and identity of Thai-Chinese communities. However, social changes, technological developments, and the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly affected the sustainability of Chinese opera performances in Thailand. This study aimed to investigate the adaptation strategies employed by the Chae Lang Ek Lao Chun Chinese Opera Troupe during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on management practices, performance organization, and the development of presentation formats in response to contemporary social conditions.
A qualitative research approach was employed. Data were collected through documentary research, performance observation, reviews of recorded performances and documentaries, and in-depth interviews with the troupe’s management and performers. The data were analyzed using content analysis.
The findings revealed four major adaptation strategies. First, the troupe modified its management Second, performance practices to comply with public health regulations. Third, it integrated modern technologies, including electronic stage displays, Thai subtitles, and supplementary performances, to enhance audience engagement. Four, the troupe utilized social media platforms for public relations and communication with younger audiences. These adaptations enabled the troupe to continue its performances despite pandemic-related restrictions while preserving the essential cultural identity of Chinese opera.
The adaptation of Chinese opera in Thailand represents a management approach for traditional performing arts and the preservation of cultural heritage, contributing to the long-term sustainability of traditional performing arts in contemporary society.
