Abstract

This research article aimed to: (1) investigate consumers' opinions regarding beds for children from birth to six years of age; (2) design and develop a multifunctional bed for children aged from birth to six years; and (3) develop a prototype of the multifunctional children's bed. This study employed a quantitative research methodology. The population and sample consisted of 50 parents of children aged from birth to six years residing in Mueang District, Chiang Mai Province. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using percentage statistics and presented through descriptive analysis.

The research findings revealed that: (1) Regarding consumers' opinions on children's beds, the majority of respondents indicated that the most important requirement was structural strength and safety (19.00%). Furthermore, 33.00% reported that existing children's beds generally serve only a single function, while 22.00% indicated that they lack additional functional features. Approximately 35.00% considered the materials difficult to clean, and 48.00% perceived the overall design as overly simple. (2) The design and development process of the multifunctional bed was inspired by the blue whale, which symbolizes protection, strength, and good fortune. The developed product can be transformed into four functional configurations according to the child's developmental stages, including a newborn bed, a bed for children aged 1–3 years, a bed for children aged 4–6 years, and a study desk. (3) The prototype development demonstrated that the bed frame was constructed from laminated rubberwood to ensure structural durability, while the storage compartment was manufactured from ABS plastic using the injection molding process. In addition, the prototype was equipped with a Bluetooth speaker system and a mobile toy set to enhance usability and support children's developmental needs during early childhood.
