Strategies For Developing Thai Language Communication Skills of Chinese Students in Bangkok
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research study aimed to 1) investigate the existing problems and needs in developing Thai language communication skills among Chinese students in Bangkok, and 2) develop strategies to enhance the Thai communication skills of Chinese students in Bangkok. This study employed a qualitative research approach. The research instrument used for data collection was a semi-structured interview. Data were collected from 18 key informants selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The research findings revealed that: 1) existing problems were clearly aligned with developmental needs. The difficulties encountered acted as driving forces that shaped the need for improvement in the same direction, particularly in vocabulary development, main idea comprehension, organization of ideas, and confidence in language use. Most students agreed that learning should integrate all four language skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing-through simulations and practical activities in order to strengthen their ability to use Thai confidently and effectively in academic settings and Thai society, and 2) the developed strategies comprised three primary approaches: (1) direct learner development utilizing Active Learning and the integration of the four macro skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing-to facilitate authentic language use; (2) teacher and staff development aimed at enhancing competencies in teaching Thai as a second language through professional training and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), empowering instructors to design effective active learning activities; and (3) educational management system development by fostering an environment that continuously promotes and sustains Thai language usage.
