Abstract

This academic article presents a processual framework for transforming the natural and cultural capital of the sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) into high-value products within the creative economy. A literature review revealed a critical research gap: previous studies often examined the botanical attributes or cultural symbolism of the lotus in isolation, lacking a systematic integration into commercial product design and community business models. To address this gap, this article proposes an integrated creative value chain comprising four core stages: 1) concept and product architecture design, 2) preliminary prototyping, 3) prototype development for testing, and 4) product evaluation and refinement. By fusing design thinking with contemporary food science, the framework outlines operational paths for two key lotus-based product lines with high economic potential: low-glycemic functional foods derived from lotus seeds and antioxidant-rich functional herbal beverages made from lotus stamens. Furthermore, the framework integrates small-scale pilot market testing and interactive sensory evaluations within a gastronomy tourism model. This combined approach allows visitors to engage directly through hands-on workshops, establishing an emotional connection and minimizing commercial risks for community enterprises while overcoming constraints like raw material seasonality and price volatility. Ultimately, this conceptual framework provides a practical roadmap for designers, local entrepreneurs, and community enterprises to transform bio-resources into distinctive intellectual property, empowering grassroots economies to compete sustainably in global markets.
