Abstract

In the 21st century, the approach to education has shifted from a focus on content to the development of learners' competencies, encompassing knowledge, skills, and desirable characteristics. A key aspect of this shift is the meaningful integration of various learning areas, such as the integration of art and mathematics, which plays a vital role in fostering creative learning and promoting holistic student development. This article proposes an integrated learning approach that combines art and mathematics, drawing on the local wisdom of Chiang Rai Province. The approach emphasizes hands-on learning and real-life connections. It includes: (1) an analysis of the conceptual framework of integrated curricula and 21st-century skills, (2) strategies for integrating mathematics and art, (3) the use of local folk-art patterns in designing learning activities, (4) examples of suitable activities for primary school students, and (5) assessment methods that reflect learners' competencies and identities. The knowledge from this article can be applied to the design of learning units that creatively integrate subject content with local contexts, to promote sustainable learning at the basic education level.
