AN ANALYSIS OF CONCEPTS AND EXPRESSIONS APPEARING IN THE MANGALATTHADīPANī

Abstract

      The purpose of this research were to study and analyze the concepts and images that appear in the Mangalatthadīpanī as a qualitative research using 2 Pali versions of the mangalatthadīpanī and a translation of the mangalatthadīpanī in Pali and five translated volumes.

      The study found 7 concepts, including 1) Concepts about associating with people, which include not associating with bad people, associating with scholars, honoring those who deserve to be honored, and seeing monks. 2) The concept of education, which includes being a scholar, studying the arts and sciences, having good discipline, being patient, being obedient, being respectful of others, being humble, listening to the Dharma and discussing the Dharma at the right time. 3) The concept of living in peace in society, which includes right conduct, giving alms, speaking kindly, abstaining from intoxicants, and solitude. 4) The concept of caring for loved ones, which includes caring for parents, caring for children, supporting wives and husbands, supporting relatives, and being grateful. 5) The concept of work, which includes living in a suitable place, not having work left unfinished, and work that is neither harmful nor sinful. 6) The concept of moral conduct, which includes moral conduct, diligence, asceticism, celibacy, seeing the Noble Truths, and realizing Nirvana. 7) The concept of the mind, which consists of a mind undisturbed by worldly conditions, a mind free from sorrow, a mind free from dust, and a mind at peace.

 In terms of imagery from the study of the mangalatthadīpanī, there are 3 types of images: 1) metaphors, 2) metaphors, and 3) metaphors with beautiful expressions and content that combines a balanced philosophy of life, it encourages readers to absorb the meaning of the Dharma hidden in the content and see the picture more clearly.
